Stay in Amsterdam's coolest and most eccentric new five-star hotel - including bed, breakfast and plenty of extras

Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht

A hip and outlandish five-star hotel with a dead-central location, the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht opened in 2012 in a building that once served as the public library of Amsterdam. On the subject of literature, the Andaz could easily provide the set to a scene from Alice in Wonderland. Acclaimed designer Marcel Wanders (dubbed the Lady Gaga of interiors) has blended Dutch iconography with gigantic bells suspended from the lobby ceiling, a striking display of intergalactic lighting and a tribute to some form of art in every corner of the hotel - including video installations playing on loop in the hallways and painted wall murals in the garden.

With so many aesthetic reasons to love this brand-new Andaz, it's good to know that this luxury hotel has style and substance by the bucketload. There's a relaxed lounge space in the heart of the hotel, the Bluespoon bar whips up expertly mixed drinks and the sleek Bluespoon restaurant does fine dining with a wholesome farm-to-table vibe. You'll also stumble upon a beautiful spa offering plenty of squishy spaces to chill out in and a 24-hour gym with state-of-the-art equipment.
RoomsGuest rooms take it a little easier than the rest of the hotel, the luxurious finishes and iconic design pieces are very much present, but in fresh, crisp white shades and only the occasional splash of bright colour or print to ensure a clear mind when you hit the sheets

Location

The Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht has a winning location that puts you withinwalking distance of some decent sightseeing. It's just a 10-15 minute stroll from the famous Leidseplein, the canals and some of Amsterdam's hippest shopping in the Jordaan area. Spend time strolling around the streets, gazing at the 17th Century buildings, exploring the many galleries and museums and cosying up in cafes. Banks must sell 'significant' number of branches, says Ed Miliband

Business news and markets: live
Finance       Ed Miliband and Ed Balls have denied that the Bank of England Governor Mark Carney disagrees with Labour's bank proposals

Ed Miliband will today promise to create at least two new challenger lenders by forcing Britain’s biggest high street banks to sell a “significant” number of branches.
The Labour leader claims that, if elected, one of his first acts would be to order the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to produce a report on how to cap the market share of the big banks and encourage new competitors.
The new challengers would be formed by forcing the country’s largest lenders to offload hundreds of branches and would be up and running before the end of the next parliament in 2020.

EARWHACKER

Samuel Beckett’s monologue Not I is rarely performed — and it’s easy to see why. The performer has to memorise a stream of fragmentary phrases and speak them with only her spotlit mouth visible, eight feet above the stage. In the current Beckett triple bill at the Royal Court, later transferring to the Duchess Theatre,
Lisa Dwan makes the job even harder for herself by choosing to spout the text at breakneck speed. The whole thing lasts just nine minutes.

It’s a brave and impressive choice, and justified to an extent by Beckett’s own opinion that it should be performed “at the speed of thought” and should act on the audience’s nerves rather than their intellect.
